One of the best things about belonging to a country that has so many festivals is getting to dress up for different occasions, getting off from work, preparing those delicious varieties of food, and just celebrating the festival with family and friends. It is amazing how food plays a significant role in every festival. Holi is one of the most vibrant celebrations in India and if you are an Indian, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Holi is the delightful foods and beverages. Gujiya

This particular food is the star, the show stopper, and the spotlight stealer among all the other delicious Holi foods. This food is known by many names depending on the region, it is also known as Pedakiya, Karanji, or Kajjikayalu. It is made with flour, semolina, and dry fruits mixture, these deep-fried sweet dumplings are made in ghee and dipped in sugar syrup. This festive favorite is available in many varieties but its three most famous avatars are Baked Gujiya, Chocolate Gujiya, and Coconut Gujiya.

Malpua

Another famous sweet dish during Holi is Malpua. It is a pancake-like dessert that is sweet and they are a festive delight. They are traditionally prepared in many homes during Holi, Navratri, and Diwali. Malpua is very popular in Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, and Maharastra, and even neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal. The batter to make Malpua includes crushed banana, coconut, all-purpose flour, and milk. There are other varieties made with fruits like mango and pineapple.

Ladoos

Perhaps one of the most famous Indian sweets both in India and around the world this dish has so many different varieties, and it differs from region to region.Some popular ladoos in India are Boondi ladoos, Besan ladoos, Coconut ladoos, Peda ladoos, Rava ladoos, Till ladoos etc, to name a few. But perhaps the most famous ladoos during Holi is Bhang ladoos. It has become synonymous with Holi as it’s ingrained in the Indian traditions and customs since ancient times.

Lassi

This drink is popular not only during Holi but all around the year in India. It is traditionally sweet or salty in flavor but you can add any fruit and make it into a new flavor. This drink is particularly very famous in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal. It is a blend of yogurt, water, spices, and fruits. Lassi has many health benefits as well, and drinking a chilled lassi during summers can prevent sunstroke and the good bacteria in the drink helps in maintaining a good digestive system. This drink is also infused with bhang during Holi and it is very famous.

Thandai

The entire essence of Holi is incomplete without this famous drink called Thandai. It is a cool refreshing drink that is both aromatic and delicious thanks to all its flavors like nuts, rose petals, spices, and milk. It is a perfect drink for months like March when the summer heat starts. Since Holi is in March it makes perfect sense to drink Thandai during the festive season.
